Upbeat’s groundbreaking research is designed by Dr. Matthew Kraft, one of the top education and data analysts in the country. Dr. Kraft, an associate professor of education and economics at Brown University, is a national expert on teacher retention and organizational effectiveness in K–12 public schools. Upbeat’s research team analyzes Upbeat’s global data to understand key trends, and makes recommendations to ensure Upbeat’s survey tool is up-to-date with the most recent research from the field.
Best Practices
Upbeat surveys have been rigorously developed and tested following best practices in survey research. Each Upbeat survey category and item was informed by prior academic research. Survey questions were written by domain experts, validated through practitioner feedback, and piloted at scale for validity and reliability. The Upbeat survey is periodically reviewed and refined by Upbeat's education research team.
National Trends
With data from a global cluster of over 39,000 teachers in 24 states across the country, Upbeat has a bird’s eye view of national trends in K-12 schools and teacher retention.
In spring 2024, the Upbeat survey data show that teachers responded most positively in these three categories:
- Care & Commitment (92%) with 98% of teachers surveyed agreeing that "Teachers at my school care about the wellbeing of students,"
- Satisfaction & Purpose (92%) with 95% of teachers surveyed agreeing "The work that I do each day has a lasting positive impact on students," and
- Instructional Leadership (86%) with 84% of teachers surveyed agreeing "The principal at my school communicates a clear vision for teaching and learning."
The categories with the lowest rankings from teachers in spring 2024 were:
- Compensation & Career Path (60%) with 52% of teacher respondents agreeing "Teachers are compensated fairly for taking on extra responsibilities at my school,"
- Work/Life Balance (70%) with 65% of teacher respondents agreeing "The workload expected of teachers at my school is reasonable," and
- School Safety & Order (72%) with 62% of teacher respondents agreeing "Disciplinary practices are applied fairly to all students at my school."
National Teacher Retention Working Group
Together with AAEE (American Association for Employment in Education), Upbeat facilitates the National Working Group on Teacher Retention. The Importance of Teacher Working Conditions for Teacher Retention in the Post-Covid Era, September 2024
The urgency of retaining excellent educators is more critical than ever in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Decades of research have shown that teachers' working conditions play a pivotal role in retention. Upbeat's latest research report analyzes responses from over 50,000 teachers on Upbeat’s Engagement Survey for Teachers in fall 2021 and fall 2022. The report underscores the vital connection between belonging, wellbeing, and teacher retention, revealing that a 10-percentage-point improvement in perceptions of school working conditions, as measured by Upbeat, leads to a 4.6-percentage-point increase in retention rates.
